Stages in the identification and removal of a prolactin microadenoma from the right side of the gland are shown in Fig. 4.9. The figure shows the exposed but undisturbed gland (Fig. 4.9(a)), the microadenoma being manipulated from the gland (Fig. 4.9(b)), and the complete tumour just before excision from the lateral aspect of the gland (Fig. 4.9(c)). The patient in this example was a 28-year-old women with a two-year history of amenorrhoea and galactorrhoea. Preoperatively, serum prolactin was 159ng/ml (3,180mu/l).
